| 1st Call Auto Haul |
| horrible service |
After reading all the positive reviews about 1st call auto haul, i decided to contact them about shipping my full sized pick up truck from california to maryland. I spoke with eric sailer, who was polite and knowledgeable on the phone. I went ahead and placed my order 3 WEEKS in advance, making sure i gave eric plenty of time to organize my shipment. As the pick up day approached, i began calling eric to see what the status was. He told me not to worry and that he would for sure find a carrier. The weekend before i leave i gave eric another call to see what the status was, he told me he had found a carrier, but preferred we hold off for another few days in order for him to find a more reliable carrier. Monday rolls around and no news, tuesday rolls around and i have to once again call him to find out what is going on. He promises on the phone that for sure he would find a carrier on wednesday...the day before my flight to the east coast. Wednesday comes around, once again....no carrier. At this point i am pretty much frustrated. Here I am, packing up to leave on thursday morning...and my truck is still stuck in california, even though eric had 3 WEEKS to get this organized. So instead of enjoying my last day in california by going to the beach or walking around town, i spend the entire afternoon chasing down other auto shippers to get my car out by the end of the week. In the end, i was able to find another shipper. The situation was a complete MESS...it seems eric is trying to run a one man show at 1st call and has way to much on his plate to handle. My advice is to call SMS or angels first...it seems they actually contact carriers directly, while eric just uses some internet website which is a meeting place between brokers and carriers.

Mike as you know I am truly sorry that I was not able to locate a carrier for you Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. However, I have located three carriers for this haul. The carrier I located on Friday was suitable, but it interfered with your weekend plans. The carriers I located for Thursday fell outside the dates you allowed me to pick-up the vehicle. Essentially, limiting me to a 3-day window to pick-up a full-sized truck is the reason this vehicle was not picked up.
In our original conversation, you told me your only requirement was the vehicle could arrive ONLY AFTER you arrived in Maryland on March 28th, 2008. We spoke several times after the initial order, but as I told you there was not much I would be able to put together until the week prior to March 28th –as that would be the preferred week a carrier would pick-up your vehicle.
On Tuesday of last week you called and told me you were going out of town for the weekend (21st-23rd) and would be taking your vehicle with you if it weren’t picked up by then. On Friday the 21st I located a carrier that was willing to pick up the vehicle that afternoon. After some debate, we agreed that you could keep the vehicle for the Easter weekend. I assumed that you would afford me more time this week to get the vehicle moved. Obviously, that assumption is where we ran into problems. I have tried in vain to get other carriers to your location, but one carrier I had discussed the move with would not have been able to reach you until Thursday and the other carrier would have put it in a tow yard until Monday. 1st Call Auto Haul doesn’t use tow yards because they create more problems than they solve.
I would like to point out that both brokers you mentioned above were given a larger window in which to pick up the vehicle and they required considerably more money to move this truck. After 1st Call Auto Haul had been working on this order for more than two weeks, both companies jumped on the same “load board” (yes –they use it too!!) and offered the carriers more money. Of course at that point if a carrier sees the same vehicle offered by three different companies, they are going to call the one with the highest price.
While I take full responsibility for not moving the Nissan Titan, I would offer this as possible reasons why the dates were not met:
1. Customer goes on mini-vacation during pivotal transport period.
2. Customer handicaps 1st Call by limiting the time available for pick-up.
3. Customer triple-books order with various brokers.
Mike, I again apologize if you feel our services are “horrible”, but I disagree that I am overwhelmed and have too much on my plate. When I spoke to you the past few days, I let you know your vehicle was my only concern -it would have helped us both if you let me know other brokers were involved.
Regards,
Eric Sailer
